Uganda may be small in size, but it is immense in birdlife, standing proudly as one of Africa’s richest birdwatching destinations.

With over 1,000 recorded bird species, including the endemic Fox’s Weaver and numerous Albertine Rift endemics, Uganda offers a birding experience that is as varied as it is rewarding.

Where to Go & What You’ll See

Queen Elizabeth National Park  (600+ species)
Often called Africa’s best single birding site, Queen Elizabeth hosts shoebills, African fish eagles, papyrus gonoleks, flamingos, and one of the continent’s richest collections of raptors across its lakes, wetlands, forests, and savannahs.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park  (350+ species)
A forest birder’s dream, Bwindi shelters most Albertine Rift endemics, including the African green broadbill, Rwenzori turaco, and Archer’s robin-chat deep within its ancient rainforest.

Murchison Falls National Park  (450+ species)
Shaped by the Nile, Murchison combines savannah and wetlands to host shoebills, Goliath herons, Abyssinian ground hornbills, and colourful bee-eaters.

Semuliki National Park  (440+ species)
A true Congo Basin outlier, Semuliki offers Central African specials such as the spot-breasted ibis, lyre-tailed honeyguide, and Maxwell’s black weaver.

Kibale Forest & Bigodi Wetland  (Over 300 species)
Famous for chimps but rich in birds, this area is home to the elusive green-breasted pitta, black bee-eater, and a wide range of forest species.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park  (180+ species)
High-altitude birding defines Mgahinga, where afro-montane species like the Rwenzori turaco and Kivu ground thrush thrive.

Lake Mburo National Park (320+ species)
Acacia woodlands and lakes attract grey-crowned cranes, African finfoot, and red-faced barbets, making Mburo ideal for relaxed birding and photography.

Mabamba Swamp  (150+ species)
One of East Africa’s best places to see the shoebill stork, Mabamba is a must-visit wetland just outside Kampala.
