TALES BY THE MOONLIGHT

3 days / 2 nights

This immersive experience is the ideal itinerary for those with just 3 days to spare but desire to experience the great art of storytelling and mythology in Acholi. For generations, customs, traditions and historical events in Acholi have been orally preserved and passed down through stories, riddles and poems shared by moonlight around the WANG OO (bonfire) after a hard day’s work.

TRANSFER TO PATIKO

An early start for the transfer to Patiko Village located 36km from Gulu City. According to ancient mythology, Patiko is believed to be the origin of prominent early Luo historical figures such as Olum, Labongo, Gipir, and other key individuals considered founders of Luo ancestry. In this land, the Big Five—elephants, lions, rhinos, and many more wild animals once roamed freely. Although these species are now extinct here, folklore stories inspired by the diverse wildlife reflect the creativity and imaginative art expression of the people who once shared their land with these majestic creatures. Oral narrations have kept these stories alive, passed down through generations by elders who share the tales by moonlight around the WANG OO, ensuring the young ones inherit this rich cultural heritage. Upon arrival, we shall kickstart the adventure off with a guided tour of the historical Fort Patiko and afterwards break off for delectable homemade lunch featuring savory Acholi cuisines. As the sun sets, take a village walk to gather firewood for the WANG OO. Afterwards, gather under the blanket of stars to enjoy captivating stories before retiring for the night.

THE ACHOLI EXPERIENCE

Start your day with a delightful breakfast then embark on a culinary adventure that begins with a visit to a nearby farm. Here, you'll harvest fresh produce and delve into ancient agricultural practices and gaining a deeper appreciation for the roots of our culinary traditions. As the afternoon unfolds, visit Fort Patiko, a historical site built by Sir Samuel Baker that reflects the region's rich history. This tour may slowly progress into a hike up Ajulu Hill where you'll be treated to breathtaking views from the summit. Wrap up the day by gathering around the bonfire (Wang Oo), where elders share Indigenous knowledge, history, and events with the younger generation through engaging storytelling and riddles. After this final activity, we will retire for the night.

LOCAL CRAFTMANSHIP

After an early breakfast, immerse yourself in traditional crafts such as pottery, basket weaving, or drum making. These skills have been a cornerstone of Acholi culture for centuries, serving as a medium to share stories, pass down knowledge, and create functional works of art. Although these crafts are slowly fading, skilled elders who continue to practice them are always eager to share their expertise. After this enriching cultural experience, we will head to Gulu or your preferred drop-off point within Uganda.

BASIC TERMS

This is a conscious tourism experience that will have your perspectives challenged and broadened as you experience a
new culture and hopefully gain fresh insights. Here are a few things you should know;

  • We do our absolute best to keep to the Programme and timings but sometimes the weather/animals/roads/slow
rhythm of village life gets the better of us!
  • Respect of the community and local culture is paramount. We recommend modest clothes that covers the knees for
the ladies to avoid discomfort for the locals and some very long uncomfortable stares.
  • Taking of photos with consent from parties involved is also to be observed. We do not recommend taking photos of
    children during the experience
  • The Ajulu Hill trail can be rough and the rock is pretty sun exposed during dry seasons, we recommend wearing long
    sleeve shirts and pants
  • In the rural area , only pit latrines (hole in the ground) are available. P.S -Including squats in your exercise routine will
    get you started for sure
  •
